Continuing the ‘Knowing Me, Knowing You’, Digital Services Manager, Mark Tuxford meets up with members of the Making Websites Better roster talking to them about their time at the company so far in a Q&A style format, enabling you to get to know the team a little better whilst putting a name to a friendly face assisting with your business presence online.

Next in the Q&A hot seat is Lead Developer, Dom Smith.

Dom’s career began after graduating with a 2.1 in Computer Science (BSc) at Sussex University. During his degree he completed a year in industry at IBM where he improved automated testing at a multinational company. From these experiences he learned the fundamentals of computing including programming, data structures, algorithms, computer networks and machine learning.

Dom leads the web development department with the responsibility of working on our biggest website projects. This involves quality and performance checks before launching through to the introduction of new technologies that improve our bespoke websites. Dom prides himself on keeping both visual and technical works current, while constantly improving what we deliver on a consistent basis.

MWB are fortunate to have Dom’s talents and overall passion for the industry we work in, but let’s find out a bit more about the man behind the code with a Q&A session...

What’s the best thing about working at MWB?
“The people and the ability to solely develop projects whilst adding my own flair.”

How do you like to unwind in your spare time after a busy week at work?
“I love a cup of coffee, but that’s probably just winding myself up even more… I enjoy creating online games, playing my guitar and watching Formula 1 racing would probably cover everything that helps me relax.”

THREE words that describe your personality.
“Apparently I’m positive, caring, and obsessive according to my girlfriend...”

What is your passion in life?
“I try to make the world a better place than when I joined it - I still haven’t quite worked out how to accomplish that just yet...”

Is there a specific experience in life that always stayed with you, changed your outlook or made you more motivated to succeed?
“I’m only 25! Can’t think of anything just yet, I’ll get back to you when it happens.”

What is your proudest achievement?
“Surviving the amount of hangovers experienced after uni sport socials.”

Who was your role model/hero growing up?
“Probably Slash when I was learning guitar.”

Where is your favourite place in the world?
“Santorini or Mauritius.”

What is the one thing you could not go a day without?
“Coffee - only because I’m now dependent on it.”

What is your favourite song?
“Maybe Butterflies and Hurricanes by Muse - it probably changes every month though.”

What is your favourite Film/TV programme?
“Considering the amount of times I’ve rewatched it - The Office.”

What are your favourite food and drink choices?
“BBQ, Coffee and Piña coladas!”

What would you say is your hidden talent?
“Not sure if it’s hidden, but I can play guitar behind my back.”

What is your biggest phobia?
“I can’t stand heights at all.”

What is your favourite motivational quote?
“I don’t have one’ - Dom Smith 2020.”

What would be top of your bucket list?
“Not bungee jumping!”

If you won well over £1,000,000 on the lottery, what would you spend your winnings on?
“A house big enough to store all the cars I’d also buy.”
